Bordesley Green is an inner-city area of Birmingham, England about two miles east of the city centre. It also contains a road of the same name. It is also a ward in the formal district of Hodge Hill. Neighbouring areas include, Alum Rock, Saltley, Small Heath and Yardley.

Heartlands Hospital is located in the eastern part of Bordesley Green. The area is also served by Yardley Green Medical Centre and Omnia Practice.

Kingfisher Country Park covers the River Cole recreation grounds which are partially covered by the area's boundaries

Alum is dedicated to providing individually tailored packages of high quality, person centred support to individuals with learning disabilities, associated conditions and mental health issues including acquired brain injury to develop the skills they need to live as independently as possible.  

Support is provided in accommodation-based setting. The level of support can range from a couple of hours per week to 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  


Our approach to support  

We support citizens in their own homes to develop independence and reach their full potential. Our support packages are developed around each citizen’s needs, whilst our focus is on enabling them become more independent and to achieve their goals. Our citizens are adults with a diagnosis of a learning disability, physical disability, autism or mental illnesses to live the lives they want, at Ravenhurst and within the community to develop independence and reach their full potential. Our support packages are bespoke and are identified around the individual needs. Our focus is on enabling people to achieve their goals, dreams and wishes and to become as independent as possible.  

The service offers specialist support to empower and encourage individuals to develop their self-esteem and the skills they need, working towards a level of independence which fits with their confidence and aspirations.  

Amongst the services available at Ravenhurst are:  

  • Specialist support for people with learning disabilities, autism, mental health illnesses, complex needs and behaviors that may challenge, to live the life they want  

  • Support with aspects of everyday life; personal care, healthy eating, medication, maintaining the home, paying bills, shopping, budgeting and maintaining tenancies  

  • Support to access benefits including direct payments and personal budgets  

  • Community outreach services; support with becoming more confident, participating in community related activities and maintaining family contacts  

  • Improvement in quality of life irrespective of illness or disability  

  • 24-hour support available providing choice, participation and inclusion  

  • Support to access education, voluntary and paid employment opportunities  

  • Support to develop self-confidence and self-esteem by way of mentoring and coaching by qualified key-workers  

  • Positive Behaviour Support with prescribed interventions (where applicable) by qualified clinical leads, who work closely with each individual to tailor a plan specifically to meet the person’s needs  


The accommodation is of a high standard, bedrooms are furnished as appropriate to the needs of the citizens and personalised to their own specific tastes. In summary Alum currently comprises of the following: 

  • Open Plan Living room

  • 5 double Bedroom

  • Front small Garden   

  • 1 kitchen diner with food stores  

  • Access to a garden at the back of the home

  • Walk in Shower downstairs

  • Back garden  

Citizens activities are arranged by staff led by Citizens, these include plenty of outdoor activities i.e accessing the local parks, the public library, local shops, day centre and planned day activity such as visiting museums or parks outside of Birmingham. Alum is accessible by public transport, citizens are encouraged and supported to use public transport travelling to the City Centre
